PHD School of Social Work Scholarships

Below are the available Ph.D. student scholarships. The recipients of each of these scholarships will be determined by the Ph.D. Committee based on a review of applications submitted by students. The deadline for applying for each of these scholarships is September 11, 2020 at 5:00pm.  The Ph.D. Committee will then review all applications, and announcements of scholarhip winners will be made shortly thereafter.

Make sure to double check that your application includes all the necessary components. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.


Ackerson Scholarship for Excellence in Student TeachingAwarded to a student who has demonstrated excellence in teaching. 1,000
Cynthia J. Bell, PhD Memorial ScholarshipAwarded to female students. Focus must be in child welfare or law.1,200
Ernie Gullerud Dissertation ScholarshipAwarded to students working on their dissertation. Must have passed dissertation proposal hearing.1,000
Daniel Sanders Scholarship in International Social DevelopmentAwarded to students with a research focus on international social development.2,500
International Studies Dissertation ScholarshipAwarded to international students working on their dissertation. Must have passed dissertation proposal hearing. Focus must be: 1) social work or social development issues in a developing country (1st priority); or 2) international or domestic poverty issues (2nd priority).3,500
John Poertner PhD Scholarship in Child WelfareAwarded to students specializing in child welfare.3,000
