Outreach Program

MSW Outreach Program- Overview

For over 40 years, the School of Social Work has served the people of the State of Illinois by offering access to its MSW program to place-bound practitioners who live and work at a distance from the Urbana-Champaign campus. The MSW Outreach program permits students with the necessary academic and practice background to enroll in foundation and advanced courses in online and blended (online with face-to-face components) formats.  The face-to-face component of blended courses meet on weekends one time per month on the Urbana-Champaign campus.  In this way, students can begin the program while continuing to work in their communities.  Prior to the field education phase of the MSW Outreach program, all students must complete a one semester on the Urbana-Champaign campus.  This semester is when students are enrolled in their concentration coursework.

Academic requirements for program admission, program advancement, course requirements and syllabi, objectives and expectations, and degree requirements are identical to the MSW Campus Program; however, the MSW Outreach Program does not offer the Leadership and Social Change concentration.

MSW Outreach Program and MSW Outreach Advanced Standing Program

MSW Outreach Program

The Master’s degree provides specialized study for advanced social work practice. Degree candidates take foundation and advanced coursework in the areas of human behavior and the social environment, social work practice, policy, research, and field education.

The MSW degree requires a total of 64-72 hours of foundation and advanced coursework, which includes field education. Once you demonstrate mastery of foundation content in each area of the curriculum, you may enroll in advanced and specialized courses. Upon successful completion of all courses required by a chosen concentration, you may then enroll in a two consecutive semester field practicum and concurrent online field seminars.

In the MSW Outreach Program, you will take the 9 courses in an online and blended format, meeting foundation and advanced course requirements. You must successfully complete at least one semester of coursework on the Urbana-Champaign campus before you can enter the field practicum. You may complete an internship where you are employed as long as that internship meets the Field Education Office guidelines.
