Funds, Awards, and Endowments

Anthony Halter Award in Teaching Excellence

In honor of former Associate Professor Anthony Halter, this award is presented to a professor who demonstrates consistent, excellence performance in the classroom, has a positive impact on students, and upholds the values of the profession and the School of Social Work.

Monkman Research Fund

The family of  Marjorie Monkman, Associate Professor Emerita, established an endowment to provide an annual award to faculty in the School of Social Work to support their research.  The endowment specifies that any faculty member may apply for the award but that priority is to be given to requests from junior faculty members (that is, Assistant Professors) whenever possible.  Conceptual as well as empirical research is to be encouraged.

Margaret M. O’Donoghue Rawles Endowment

This fund will provide support for excellence among the School’s faculty.

Nancy Weinberg Fund

This fund provides unrestricted support to the School including: graduate student awards, and faculty awards.  This fund is used to promote academic excellence and enhance the overall educational experience of the students, and honors Professor Weinberg’s research interests on support systems for the terminally ill and coping strategies for people with disabilities.

Daniel S. Sanders Peace and Social Justice Lecture Fund

This fund supports an annual lecture named in honor of Daniel S. Sanders, internationally known leader in the effort to achieve world peace, human rights, and social justice, served as dean of the School of Social Work from 1986-1989.

Madeline Forman Award

This award provides research grants towards work related to the terminally ill and people with disabilities.

Jill Doner Kagle Building Fund

This Fund is named in honor of Jill Doner Kagle, Professor and Dean Emerita of the School of Social Work. Dr. Kagle received her PhD from the University of Illinois School of Social Work in 1978, and joined the faculty later that year. This fund will be used to purchase equipment (such as technology or furniture) or structural upgrades that would not otherwise be available to benefit faculty, students and academic programs in the new building for the School of Social Work at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

June Henderson Memorial Fund

This award was established in honor and recognition of the many personal and professional accomplishments of School of Social Work alumna June Henderson (MSW ’71). Through her life, she demonstrated a passionate concern for children with special problems.

Brieland Visiting Scholar Lecture Fund

Donald  Brieland,  leader  in  child  welfare  and  social  work  and  the  law,  served  as  Dean  of  the  School  of  Social Work from 1975 – 1981. The Brieland Visiting Scholar is supported by an endowment created by Dean  Brieland and his family to advance scholarly discussion in social work and social welfare.
