Educational Background

Paula Allen-Meares served as Chancellor of the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) from 2009 through 2015.

Dr. Allen-Meares transitioned to UIC from the University of Michigan, where she served as dean of the top-ranked School of Social Work for 15 years and as Norma Radin Collegiate Professor of Social Work and Professor of Education. Previously, she served as our Dean of Social Work at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

A native of Buffalo, NY, she earned her bachelor’s degree at the State University of New York at Buffalo and master’s and PhD degrees from Urbana-Champaign.

Her research interests include the functions of social workers employed in educational settings; psychopathology in children, adolescents, and families; adolescent sexuality; premature parenthood; and various aspects of social work practice. Major themes in her research include improving the mental health/health of poor children and adolescents of color; adolescent pregnancy; and the strengths of African-American parents and communities. Her research is supported by leading federal and foundation funders and is cited around the world; her theoretical model on school social work for at-risk youth has been translated into practice in South Africa, and principles of this model are also used in South Korea, Australia, China, and Europe.

Dr. Allen-Meares has published 91 journal articles, coedited journals, books, and book chapters, and 74 essays, monographs, technical reports, editorials, forwards, book reviews, testimonials/endorsements, and conference proceedings. She also serves on the editorial boards of several scholarly journals and publications. She is a member of the Institute of Medicine and a trustee of the New York Academy of Medicine. In addition to serving as Chancellor, she also holds faculty appointments in social work and education at the UIC and Urbana-Champaign campuses.

She received the Management Institute Certificate from Harvard University; completed the Executive Development Center’s Senior Administrator Seminar at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign’s College of Commerce and Business Administration; and the Management of Managers Certificate from the University of Michigan School of Business Administration.
