The University of Chicago Medicine Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neuroscience seeks applications for a part-time (20 hours/week), benefits-eligible licensed clinical social worker to fulfill the duties of Tobacco Treatment Specialist (TTS) with cancer patients. The TTS will be integrated into the University of Chicago Cancer Center’s outpatient and inpatient clinics and will deliver cancer center-wide tobacco cessation programming using evidence-based assessments, referrals, and interventions. Responsibilities include conducting clinical assessments and interfacing with a web-based application to coordinate all aspects of program delivery, facilitating appropriate referrals to the Illinois Tobacco Quitline or UCM’s Courage to Quit® program, providing group and/or individual smoking cessation therapy using evidence-based practices, and documentation in the medical record. The TTS will be embedded in the University of Chicago Comprehensive Cancer Center clinics, and will be an integral part of a multi-disciplinary care team that includes oncologists, nurse practitioners, social workers, psychologists, and psychiatrists.
The ideal candidate will have experience with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Motivational Interviewing approaches, working in a medical center, tobacco treatment and/or substance abuse program, or related high-volume health care setting. Additionally, experience working with high-risk, low-income, underserved minorities and medical populations and/or smokers and substance abusers is preferred.
The tobacco cessation initiative will be implemented at the University of Chicago Comprehensive Cancer Center and is the first of its kind in the Chicago area. The new program is funded by a National Cancer Institute (NCI) grant coordinated by Drs. Andrea King and Yasmin Asvat, who will be directing and supervising the TTS in all tobacco cessation program-related activities.
- Master’s degree or higher in Social Work from an accredited institution required.
- Minimum of one year of related experience required.
- Licensed in the State of Illinois, LCSW required.
