Sanders Lecture

Internationally known as a leader in efforts to achieve world peace, human rights and social justice. Daniel S. Sanders served as Dean of the University of Illinois School of Social Work from 1986-1989.

Daniel S. Sanders received his B. A. degree in Social Science from the University of Ceylon (1953); a Diploma in Social Welfare from the University of Wales where he was a British Council Scholar (1958); an M.S.W. (1967) and PhD from the University of Minnesota (1971).

Throughout his career Dr. Sanders held numerous academic as well as invited and elected appointments in social work-related organizations world-wide.  While working on his undergraduate studies in Ceylon he was the Assistant Director and Counselor for Students at the University Christian Hostel (1953-55).  After completing undergraduate studies he was appointed Associate Director and Lecturer at the Ceylon Institute of Social Work in Colombo, Sri Lanka (1955-61).  It was during that time that he was invited as a British Council Scholar to the University of Wales where he completed a Diploma degree in Social Welfare. He was heavily involved with community development, and founded the Coordinating Council of Community Development Projects in Ceylon and was appointed its first Chairman (1959-61).   From there he was appointed Executive Director and Research Associate at the Institute of Social Study, Sri Lanka (1961-65).

Dr. Sanders came to the University of Minnesota in 1965 to pursue his Ph.D. in Social Work.  During that time, he was appointed a World Council of Churches Ecumenical Fellow (1965-66), and Institute of International Education Development Fellow (1966-67).  He completed his Ph.D. in 1971 on the topic of the impact of reform movements on social policy change, focusing on social insurance.

Dan was Associate Professor in the School of Social Work at the University of Hawaii-Manoa from 1971-1973; Professor from 1973-75; and was appointed Dean and Director of International Programs from 1975-86.   From 1986 – 1989 he served as Dean, Professor, and Director of the Center for the study of International Social Welfare Policies and Services, and the School of Social Work at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.  During this time, he organized the Women and Peace conference on campus.

He was the author of numerous books, including “The Impact of Reform Movements on Social Policy Change: The Case of Social Insurance.”  The last book edited by Dr. Sanders was “Peace and Development: An Interdisciplinary Perspective,” which was released soon after his untimely death in October 1989.

Dr. Sanders was a member of the Academy of Certified Social Workers; the Council of Social Work Education; the National Association of Social Workers; the International Council on Social Welfare; and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.  He was President of the United Nations Association of Hawaii.  He received the Messenger of Peace Award from the United Nations, presented by the Governor of Hawaii, George Ariyoshi.  He was President and one of the founders of the Inter-University Consortium for International Social Development (IUCSD), which is now called the International Consortium for Social Development (ICSD), and he remained in this role for about a decade until his death.  The Peace and Social Justice lecture is presented in his name at the biennial conferences of the ICSD.

In addition to his qualities of leadership and scholarship Dan was a wonderful human being.
