The Graduate Social Work Association (GSWA)

The Graduate Social Work Association (GSWA) is a student led group of current MSW students that serves as a vehicle for creating and fostering a collective community among students, the school, faculty and the community at large. The GSWA Executive Board represents their fellow peers at various recruitment events and also serves as a liaison between MSW students and the School of Social Work Administration. Each year the GSWA Executive Board sets goals for the year to increase student involvement and provide social, educational, and philanthropic opportunities for MSW students.

MSW students interested in serving on the Executive Board submit applications of interest at the beginning of each academic year to serve on the Board for fall and spring academic semesters. Examples of prior events and activities the GSWA Executive Board assisted and participated in include:

  • Representing the School of Social Work on current student panels on Visiting Day and at Open Houses
  • Hosting the University of Illinois’ LGBT Ally Training
  • Organizing various mid-term distressing activities
  • Planning social outings at local restaurants
  • Assisting with gathering donations for the School of Social Work’s annual student giving campaign
  • Preparing and distributing care packages to fellow MSW students during final exams week
  • Promoting School of Social Work events on social media
