The Impact of Domestic Violence on Child and Adolescent Development

This 3-hour instructor-led webinar will provide helping professionals with an overview of the impacts of domestic violence on childhood development, including signs, symptoms, and behaviors, and include information about effects across the lifespan. We will introduce evidence-based interventions and therapeutic models that can be used to support and treat children and families exposed to violence. We will conclude by discussing the value of developing a natural support system, increasing protective factors, and building resiliency for children impacted by domestic violence.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify definitions, prevalence, and perceptions of domestic and intimate partner violence.
  • Describe the impacts of exposure to domestic violence on childhood development and across the lifespan.
  • Recognize the evidence-based interventions and models that can be effective in treatment.
  • Discuss the importance of developing natural supports, protective factors, and resiliency.

Workshop Presenters

Stephanie Johansson currently serves as a Field Specialist with the Provider Assistance and Training Hub (PATH) team, providing training and support pertaining to the IM+CANS, IM-CAT, and other curriculum that assists Illinois providers in obtaining the necessary skills to help individuals and families make meaningful changes in their lives. Prior to joining the PATH team, Stephanie provided individual, couples, and family therapy in both community-based mental health and private practice settings, with a focus on childhood exposure to violence and trauma-focused care and interventions. She also has more than a decade of experience in administrative roles, leadership and management, and training creation and provision throughout the state in a variety of settings.

Stephanie holds a master’s degree in social work from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and is an LCSW in the state of Illinois.

Amy Overmyer is an IM+CANS Coaching Specialist with the Provider Assistance and Training Hub (PATH). Amy has a Master of Arts degree in Clinical Psychology from The Illinois School of Professional Psychology and is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor. Prior to this role, she worked in private child welfare agencies in various roles including case manager, SOC/IPS therapist, and CQI coordinator and supervisor. Amy is a Certified Trainer of Solution Based Casework (SBC) and has spent the last several years as Manager of Model Implementation, providing training and support to state child welfare systems and private agencies as they implemented the SBC practice model. Concurrently, Amy is a Registered Play Therapist and supports families at a small private practice where she supervises beginning clinicians and provides play therapy to children and intensive support to their caregivers.
