Rachel Garthe Recognized for Early Career Excellence

The School of Social Work at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign proudly announces that Dr. Rachel Garthe has received the 2025 ECPN John B. Reid Early Career Award from the Society for Prevention Research (SPR). This prestigious award recognizes her outstanding contributions to prevention science through research, policy engagement, and community-based initiatives aimed at preventing youth violence and promoting adolescent well-being.

As Director of the Violence Prevention Research Lab and Undergraduate Research Coordinator, Dr. Garthe has led numerous interdisciplinary and community-engaged projects. Her work centers on developing trauma-informed, culturally responsive interventions for historically marginalized youth, including Black, Latinx, transgender, and gender expansive populations. Her efforts have not only advanced academic understanding but have also directly informed state policy through collaborations with the Illinois Lieutenant Governor’s Office and several state agencies.

In 2024, Dr. Garthe authored the Statewide Violence Prevention Plan for Illinois: 2025–2029, a comprehensive and collaborative effort led by the Illinois Criminal Justice Information Authority. This plan outlines goals and recommendations to prevent violence and promote health and safety through trauma-informed, evidence-based approaches.

Additionally, Dr. Garthe is leading a multidisciplinary project funded by the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office on Violence Against Women to develop a digital ecosystem supporting survivors and reducing gender-based violence on college campuses. This initiative aims to provide resources and support through a mobile application used by University of Illinois students, faculty, and staff.

With over 70 peer-reviewed publications and more than $3.8 million in external funding, Dr. Garthe’s research continues to have a profound impact. The award highlights the very qualities Dr. Garthe embodies: rigorous research, impactful leadership, and a strong commitment to engaging communities.

Congratulations to Dr. Garthe on this well-deserved recognition.
