Illinois Youth Survey Reveals Concerning Trends in Teen Substance Use

A recent report from the Illinois Youth Survey highlights concerning trends in alcohol and cannabis use among teens across the state. Conducted every two years, the survey gathers critical data on youth behaviors to help inform prevention and intervention strategies statewide.

According to the latest findings, Illinois teens are drinking nearly twice the national average, with alcohol use increasing among eighth graders in particular. Researchers also observed a rise in cannabis use among teens.

“This year, there were a couple of concerning trends, primarily with eighth graders,” said Doug Smith, professor in the School of Social Work and director of the Center for Prevention Research and Development (CPRD). “The reason this is important is that if you use drugs before age 14 or 15, you have a higher likelihood of becoming addicted later on in life.”

The Illinois Youth Survey provides valuable insights for educators, health professionals, and policymakers working to address substance use and promote youth well-being. The 2024 data will inform upcoming prevention efforts, with the next statewide survey scheduled for 2026.
