How long will it take to complete the program?
The DSW is designed as a part-time, 3-year program, including two and a half years of coursework and one semester focused on your capstone project.
Is the program fully online?
Yes. The program is fully online with both asynchronous learning and weekly live virtual class sessions.
Do I need an MSW to apply?
A master’s degree is required, but it does not have to be in social work. Applicants with a graduate degree in an equivalent or related field from an accredited institution are eligible to apply.
What is the difference between a DSW and a PhD in Social Work?
While both are doctoral-level degrees, they serve different purposes. A Doctor of Social Work (DSW) is a practice-focused degree designed for experienced professionals who want to advance their leadership, administrative, and applied research skills to create real-world change in organizations and communities. A PhD in Social Work is a research-focused degree that prepares graduates to conduct original academic research and often pursue careers in higher education or research institutions.
Do you offer other specializations besides a focus in organizational administration and leadership?
Not currently. As a new program, we are focused on launching and delivering a high-quality curriculum in organizational administration and leadership. Future specializations may be considered as the program grows.
How much will the program cost?
Tuition is charged on a per-credit-hour basis and is the same for all students, regardless of residency. The DSW program requires 12 four-credit courses (48 credit hours total) over three years. At current rates, the total cost would be around $29,000, though rates may vary. Please check the University’s Registrar website for the most up-to-date tuition information and use those rates to estimate their total cost.
What is the time commitment?
Students take one 4-credit course every 8 weeks, requiring approximately 15–20 hours per week for readings, assignments, and class participation.
Can I work full-time while enrolled?
Yes. The program is intentionally designed for working professionals, with flexibility built into the course schedule.
Will I need to come to campus?
No. The program is fully online. Optional opportunities to connect on campus may be offered.
Is the DSW degree accredited?
Degree programs at the University of Illinois are fully accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC). Unlike the MSW, which is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE), DSW programs do not require CSWE accreditation. Your DSW degree from Illinois will carry the full weight and recognition of a doctoral degree from a research (R1) university.
Is the GRE required?
No. The GRE is not required for admission.
Is the TOEFL required?
Yes. International applicants must submit a TOEFL score of 103 or higher.
Is the tuition different for international students?
No. Illinois applies a single flat rate per credit hour for self-supporting programs, so international students pay the same as in-state and out-of-state students.
