Transferring into the School of Social Work from undeclared or another Illinois major? We’re excited that you’re exploring this path!

Students who are currently enrolled in another major or classified as undeclared at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign can apply to the School of Social Work as an Intercollegiate Transfer (ICT).

Deadlines & Requirements

The School of Social Work offers rolling admission for ICT applicants. You can apply up until the term begins. However, to ensure you receive a decision before registration for the new term opens, we recommend adhering to the priority deadlines.

The priority deadline is March 1 for Fall and October 15 for Spring.

Requirements:

  • Cumulative minimum GPA 2.5 or higher
  • Evidence of strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Evidence of personal attributes that are suitable for the profession of social work
  • Successful completion of the application process for professional program entry
  • Volunteer* or paid work experience in a social service agency prior to beginning the program is not required but is strongly encouraged

* Volunteer hours can be completed through service learning projects completed for course requirements as well as through volunteer experiences with community organizations.  The Community Learning Lab and The Office of Civic Life (formerly the Office of Volunteer Programs) are good sources for ideas on how to get involved.Application & Process

Submit Your ICT Application

When you’re ready to apply, complete the Intercollege Transfer Application. Your application will be reviewed by the School of Social Work. Admission decisions are typically shared via email within a few weeks after submission.

Admission Decision & Next Steps

Once you receive your decision:

  • Admitted students will receive instructions to confirm or decline admission.
  • After confirming, you’ll be invited to meet with our BSW Academic Advisor to review your degree plan and register for classes.
  • Denied or deferred students are encouraged to schedule a follow-up meeting to discuss future options or preparation steps.
