BSW Student Selected for Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute’s Foster Youth Internship Program
Leyda Garcia Greenawalt will spend the summer in Washington DC, working on behalf of children and youth involved in the child welfare system
ILLINOIS Social Work BSW student, Leyda Garcia Greenawalt was in foster care in Illinois for seven and a half years before being adopted at 19 years old. She is a part of the National Foster Youth Institute (NFYI) Inaugural Leadership Corps, NASW-IL board of directors as the BSW representative, Foster Care Alumni of America – IL Chapter BOD as policy chair, and OMNI Youth Services BOD as a youth representative. Leyda has spoken at galas and events supporting CASA and Allendale Association, as well a panel at Harvard University for the Fostering Change Network. She has participated in the yearly Congressional Foster Youth Shadow Day as both a participant and a leader.
Most recently, Leyda was selected for the 2018 Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute’s (CCAI) Foster Youth Internship Program. Leyda will spend the summer in Washington DC, working on behalf of children and youth involved in the child welfare system who have been or are in need of adoption and/or foster care services.
The Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute (CCAI) is a non-partisan, non-profit organization “dedicated to raising awareness about children in the United States and around the world in need of permanent homes through adoption”. CCAI seeks to educate and inform Members of Congress in adoption, foster care, and child welfare issues that affect their constituents through congressional briefings, leadership training programs, educational trips, and other notable programs.
