Assistant Director, Veterans Center

Job description

We seek a full-time Assistant Director to provide oversight and coordination of Veterans Center operations, including student outreach and persistence, in collaboration with other areas of the College and external social support services.

General responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Monitor daily operations of the Heartland Veterans Center
  • Serve as an advocate for the needs of student veterans
  • Oversee the hiring, training, scheduling, and daily tasks of Veteran Center student employees
  • Support outreach, recruitment, and enrollment of student veteran and military-connected students
  • Work collaboratively with other HCC faculty, staff, and external constituencies on initiatives for HCC Veteran students
    • Advance persistence initiatives by helping students address barriers to success, such as securing veterans benefits, childcare, and transportation assistance
    • Streamline and schedule support services through Financial Aid, Advisement, Counseling, Tutoring Center, and Student Access & Accommodation Services
    • Partner with Student Engagement to provide and promote campus and community engagement opportunities for student veterans
  • Maintain professional relationships with local social service providers, community partners, and support networks who refer student veterans and military-connected students to Heartland
  • Develop annual comprehensive program calendar and implement programming designed to complement the mission of the Center, including but not limited to: Veterans Day, workshops, speakers, etc.
  • Prepare monthly and other reports as needed

 

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Experience working with Veteran populations or prior military service
  • Proven commitment to and understanding of the special needs of students from diverse academic, socioeconomic, and cultural backgrounds
  • Strong organizational and planning skills, attention to detail, ability to work both independently and as part of a team and to function professionally under pressure
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills

 

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience working with student Veterans for 2+ years
  • Prior military service
  • Knowledge of local social and veteran services resources and systems
  • Knowledge of Veterans Administration (VA) benefits and how to navigate them
