This interactive series is designed to provide helping professionals with a comprehensive overview of Secondary Traumatic Stress (STS), Vicarious Trauma (VT), Compassion Fatigue (CF), and Burnout, and their impact on individuals working in the helping professions and beyond. This series will increase participants’ understanding of the impacts of indirect trauma through the innovative lens of the empathy-based strain framework. Participants will learn to define and distinguish these distinct but interrelated concepts and their implications for personal and professional well-being. Register for Part 2 HERE.

Learning Objectives

  1. Define and distinguish secondary traumatic stress, vicarious trauma, compassion fatigue, and burnout.
  2. Recognize the impact of these four types of indirect trauma on helping professionals.
  3. Identify ways to increase personal and professional awareness of indirect trauma, as well as strategies to protect, prevent, and cope with the impact of indirect trauma.

Workshop Presenters

Ken Dalla Costa works as a Field Specialist with the Provider Assistance and Training Hub in the School of Social Work. Ken provides training and assistance in the delivery of the IM+CANS assessment, Collaborative Treatment Planning, the IM-CAT and Crisis Safety Planning.  Ken holds a Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology from Eastern Illinois University and is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor, LCPC in the state of Illinois. Ken has twenty-five years of experience in the mental health field, mainly in the child welfare system working as a caseworker, therapist, clinical supervisor, and Associate Director of Clinical Services, providing clinical supervision, consultation, and program development. Ken especially enjoys working with youth and families in crisis and those that experience the effects of gun violence.

Stephanie Johansson currently serves as a Field Specialist with the Provider Assistance and Training Hub (PATH) team, providing training and support pertaining to the IM+CANS, IM-CAT, and other curriculum that assists Illinois providers in obtaining the necessary skills to help individuals and families make meaningful changes in their lives. Prior to joining the PATH team, Stephanie provided individual, couples, and family therapy in both community-based mental health and private practice settings, with a focus on childhood exposure to violence and trauma-focused care and interventions. She also has more than a decade of experience in administrative roles, leadership and management, and training creation and provision throughout the state in a variety of settings.

Stephanie holds a master’s degree in social work from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and is an LCSW in the state of Illinois.
