New Report Highlights Domestic Violence Survivors’ Experiences in Illinois
November 06, 2024
About the Report
The Illinois Coalition Against Domestic Violence (ICADV) recently collaborated with the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign School of Social Work’s Violence Prevention Research Lab to elevate the experiences and perspectives of domestic violence survivors across Illinois. Through a series of focus groups in 2023, survivors shared their journeys, challenges, and recommendations, shedding light on key areas for growth and reform within domestic violence support systems.
In 13 focus groups, 46 survivors from diverse backgrounds recounted their help-seeking experiences. Many sought assistance from domestic violence agencies, legal services, and community organizations, highlighting the importance of supportive advocates who empowered them. However, survivors noted enduring barriers to accessing services, with challenges such as eligibility restrictions, stigma, and gaps within formal systems creating significant hurdles.
The survivors’ stories call attention to the pressing need for more inclusive and trauma-informed care. Recommendations emphasized enhancing education on domestic violence, expanding service practices to include comprehensive, long-term supports, and reducing stigma across systems. Additionally, survivors highlighted the need for services that respect cultural backgrounds, provide multilingual resources, and accept diverse family dynamics, including pets and accommodations for disabilities.
These insights are shaping ICADV’s ongoing work to strengthen supports for all survivors. By integrating survivor voices into service and policy enhancements, ICADV reaffirms its commitment to fostering a safer, more responsive system for survivors across Illinois.
