Student Advocates for Those Aging out of Foster Care During Pandemic

Leyda Garcia-Greenawalt, BSW ’19 and current MSW student, advocate and president of the Foster Care Alumni Association of America Illinois Chapter, is helping to protect those aging out of foster care during a pandemic.

The Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) has agreed to continue protecting soon-to-be 18- and 21-year-olds who are set to age out of the state’s foster care system during the coronavirus pandemic.

“At a time when young people … are returning to the homes of their parents all over the country, we ask that you consider the plight of our youth in care who do not have that option. The state stepped in and took over for their parents years ago because the youth were being abused or neglected, and the state needs to keep its doors open to these youth during this crisis psum dolor sit amet, consectetuer adipiscing elit volutpat mattis eros,” says a letter from the Illinois chapter of the Foster Care Alumni Association of America.
