Celebrating Connections: Updates From the Community Learning Lab
Highlights:
The Community Learning Lab (CLL), established under the leadership of former Dean Wynne Korr, is a dynamic initiative within the School of Social Work designed to enhance community engagement and provide practical learning experiences for students. Here’s a look at some of the recent highlights:
CLL-Krannert Collaboration
In an innovative partnership, the School of Social Work’s Community Learning Lab has teamed up with Krannert to enhance student and community engagement. This collaboration offers professionals and social work students—particularly those focused on working with young children—the opportunity to attend Krannert performances. Following the shows, participants engage in workshops led by Social Work PhD students and local social workers. These workshops are designed to help participants process the performances and equip them with tools for assisting children in managing strong emotions through expressive arts, storytelling, and play.
Supporting Local Causes
The CLL has also been active in supporting local causes thanks to donor contributions. Recently, the Lab provided free tickets for social work students to attend a fundraiser for CU Autism, featuring renowned speaker Dr. Temple Grandin. Additionally, tickets were offered for an LGBTQ film screening at Ebertfest, highlighting the Lab’s commitment to promoting diverse and inclusive community experiences.
Community Connections Corner
During the academic year, the CLL has strengthened its network with a diverse array of community partners. The Community Connections Corner showcases the many organizations that have engaged with the Lab, reflecting a robust commitment to collaborative community development.
World Social Work Day Events
The CLL also participated in World Social Work Day events, underscoring its dedication to the field. Notably, Kim Rice, along with representatives from Rantoul Schools and Will Villaflor, presented at a community engagement conference. Their presentation highlighted the SOCW 461 collaboration with Rantoul Schools, demonstrating the Lab’s commitment to impactful educational partnerships.
Upcoming CLL Thank You Event
Lastly, the CLL will host a Thank You Event to acknowledge the support received through grant-writing efforts. This event will celebrate the contributions of all involved and look forward to future collaborations.
The Community Learning Lab continues to make strides in fostering meaningful community engagement and support. Stay tuned for more updates and opportunities to get involved!
