Intergenerational Adversity among Youth and their Parents/Caregivers in Illinois: Recommendations for Screenings & Family-based Prevention Efforts
This presentation will examine the transmission (i.e., sending down to younger generations) of adversity. A wealth of research demonstrates the impact of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) on adult outcomes. More recently, researchers have begun examining the link between parent/caregiver ACEs and their children’s ACEs, experiences with violence, and mental health outcomes. This presentation will examine the link between parent/caregiver and youth adversity using data from the FAMILIES study, which collected data from 679 caregiver-youth dyads in Illinois. The presentation will highlight prevalence of parent/caregiver and youth adversity and key mechanisms that may explain the transmission of adversity. The presentation will conclude with recommendations grounded in this research, including screenings for adversity, family-based violence prevention efforts, and intervention programs for families who have experienced intergenerational adversity.

Ghosts and Angels in the Nursery: Exploring the Intergenerational Transmission of Trauma and Healing
How are traumatic experiences transmitted to children intergenerationally? In this session, we will delve into the profound interplay between the past and present within families, uncovering the ghosts of trauma and angels of healing that impact children. Drawing upon Alicia Leiberman’s work, we will discuss trauma cues in babies and young children, methods to strengthen and restore a strong sense of safety, develop secure attachments with caregivers, and return to typical developmental functioning.
Presenter: Flora Cohen, Assistant Professor, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign School of Social Work
