Type 73 School Social Work Endorsement

What You Need to Know

We offer the Post-MSW Program for those seeking the Type 73 School Social Work Endorsement.  This endorsement is needed to practice social work in public schools in Illinois.

If you earned your MSW in a concentration other than school social work, you will need to take and complete coursework, as well as a one-semester internship in an Illinois public school.

You will complete the following requirements:

  • Spring Semester:

    • SOCW 507:  School Social Work Practice
    • SOCW 519:  Public School Policy and Services
    • These two courses are offered on-campus one day each week
  • Fall Semester:

    • SOCW 531:  Practice in Organizational Settings
    • SOCW 568:  Field Instruction
    • Candidates complete a one semester internship working five days each week in a public school setting.  SOCW 568 will meet this requirement.  SOCW 531 is offered in an online format to allow candidates to seek an internship near their home.

Requirements to Apply:

  1. Master of Social Work from a school of social work accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE)
  2. A minimum grade point average of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) from the university in which the MSW was obtained.  The Illinois State Board of Education requires that all students completing and educator licensure program obtain a C or higher in all graduate coursework.  A grade of C or higher must have been achieved in all graduate coursework completed for your MSW.
  3. The Illinois State Board of Education requires that all students applying to an educator licensure program take and pass the Test of Academic Proficiency (TAP), submit an ACT plus writing score of 22 or higher, OR submit an SAT score of 1030 or higher.  The ACT plus writing score or SAT score must be less than 10 years old.  A passing score on the Basic Skills Test from the past 10 years will also be accepted.

When applying to the Post-MSW Program, you must submit documentation of successfully passing the TAP, completing the ACT plus writing or SAT requirement, or passing the Basic Skills within the past 10 years.
