Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) with Endorsement in School Social Work

What You Need to Know

We offer the Post-MSW Program for those seeking an Illinois PEL School Social Work Endorsement.  This licensed and endorsement is needed to practice social work in public schools in Illinois.

If you earned your MSW in a concentration other than school social work, you will need to take and complete coursework, as well as a one-semester internship in an Illinois public school.

You will complete the following requirements:

  • Spring Semester:

    • SOCW 507:  School Social Work Practice
    • SOCW 519:  Public School Policy and Services
    • These two courses are offered on-campus one day each week
  • Fall Semester:

    • SOCW 531:  Practice in Organizational Settings
    • SOCW 568:  Field Instruction
    • Candidates complete a one semester internship working five days each week in a public school setting.  SOCW 568 will meet this requirement.  SOCW 531 is offered in an online format to allow candidates to seek an internship near their home.

Requirements to Apply:

  1. Master of Social Work from a school of social work accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE)
  2. A minimum grade point average of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) from the university in which the MSW was obtained.  The Illinois State Board of Education requires that all students completing an educator licensure program obtain a C or higher in all graduate coursework.  A grade of C or higher must have been achieved in all graduate coursework completed for your MSW.
  3. The Illinois State Board of Education requires that all students applying to an educator licensure  Proof of passing one of the following tests:
    • Test of Academic Proficiency  (TAP)
    • ACT plus writing – Prior to 9/1/15 – Composite score of 22 or higher and a minimum score of 19 on the Combined English/Writing portion. 9/1/15 9/9/16– Composite score of 22 or higher and a minimum score of 16 on the Writing portion.  9/10/16 and later – Composite score of 22 or higher and a minimum score of 6 on the Writing portion.   All scores must be from one test administration taken on the same date.
    • SAT – Prior to 3/5/16 – Composite score of 1030 (critical reading + mathematics = 1030 or higher) and a minimum score of 450 on writing. After 3/5/16 – Composite score of 1110 (evidence-based reading and writing + mathematics = 1110 or higher) and a minimum score of 26 on writing and language.  All scores must be from one test administration taken on the same date.
    • Basic Skills test

PEL APPLICATION PROCESS:

Deadline to apply for Spring 2017 is October 15, 2016

1)      If you received your MSW from the School of Social Work at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, you will apply by submitting the following:

    1. PEL Certification Program Application
    2. PEL and SSW Endorsement Program Personal Statement
    3. Resume
    4. Proof of passing one of the following.
      • Test of Academic Proficiency  (TAP)
      • ACT plus writing – Prior to 9/1/15 – Composite score of 22 or higher and a minimum score of 19 on the Combined English/Writing portion. 9/1/15 9/9/16– Composite score of 22 or higher and a minimum score of 16 on the Writing portion.  9/10/16 and later – Composite score of 22 or higher and a minimum score of 6 on the Writing portion. All scores must be from one test administration taken on the same date.
      • SAT – Prior to 3/5/16 – Composite score of 1030 (critical reading + mathematics = 1030 or higher) and a minimum score of 450 on writing. 2)     If you have completed your MSW at another university or have NOT been a graduate student at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign apply by completing the following:

  • Complete Graduate College Application

    • Three (3) letters of reference (must be academic and/or professional in nature).   Letters of reference are part of the online Graduate College Application.
    • Resume– This should include relevant education, volunteer, and work experience. The completed resume should be uploaded to the Graduate College Application under the “statement” section.
    • PEL and SSW Endorsement Program Personal Statement– This document must be uploaded to the Graduate College Application under the “statement” section where it says, “Please describe your previous academic work in your proposed field of study…”
      1. How long have you been practicing social work?  Please describe your experience.
      2. Share what experiences have contributed to your interest in school social work.  What has led you to seek your School Social Work PEL?
      3. Describe any experience you have gained in a school setting.
    • PEL and SSW Endorsement Program Application – To be completed and uploaded to the Graduate College Application under the “Program – Specific Questions” section.
    • Official Transcripts from all colleges/universities attended. Mail directly to the School of Social Work
  • Proof of passing one of the following.
    • Test of Academic Proficiency  (TAP)
    • ACT plus writing – Prior to 9/1/15 – Composite score of 22 or higher and a minimum score of 19 on the Combined English/Writing portion. 9/1/15 9/9/16– Composite score of 22 or higher and a minimum score of 16 on the Writing portion.  9/10/16 and later – Composite score of 22 or higher and a minimum score of 6 on the Writing portion.
